With the new VSX sports bra in stores now at Victoria’s Secret and my love of yoga, I’ve decided to look into workout fashion. There are two types of people, those who go to the gym wearing a big t-shirt and sweat pants and those who go to the gym in the latest Nike sports bra and matching leggings. Sure, the point of working out is to get in shape, it’s not a fashion show, but looking cute and buying the latest gym gear may motivate you to go, as well as make you look a little less gross after sweating buckets in your yoga body boot camp class. Plus, if the on-campus recreation center is your gym of choice, you just may run into that cute boy from lecture.
Kelly Allen, CSU junior, Apparel and Merchandising major with Design and Production minor, is currently in the process of getting her yoga certification. Students learn the basic understanding of yoga, the history, the literature, healing, and ayurvedic or the background of yoga. The three main elements of yoga are mental, emotional, and spiritual and the poses help you connect to other aspects, always relating back to what the yoga is truly doing for you. Allen said, “Yoga means union, to yoke, bring together, you are coming together as a group in your practice.” Although Allen is mainly interested in the deeper meaning of yoga, she is excited about the new collections the store has to offer. She thinks the new VSX sports bras are cute while still being good quality and supportive. Victoria’s Secret also has a large selection of yoga shirts, yoga jackets, leggings, and every mans favorite, the yoga pant.
Kristal Wilson, CSU junior, Health and Exercise Science major and Target employee, practices yoga regularly. “I love the exercise gear Victoria’s Secret has, but I can’t afford to pay $50 dollars for a sports bra or $35 for yoga pants, Target has a huge collection of workout clothing that is just as cute, even though it doesn’t have the PINK label”, said Wilson.
If you don’t have the budget to spend money on workout gear and a yoga membership at a studio in town, buy a membership at the Rec Center, it’s about $360 cheaper a semester to attend classes there as opposed to CorePower Yoga and according to instructor Monica Palomino, just as good. Monica Palomino was trained in Irvine, California at CorePower Yoga. She moved to Colorado for college and now works at the CSU Rec Center. The fact that some of the CSU Rec Center yoga instructors have done their training and instructing at bigger studios like CorePower Yoga shows there is not a difference in instruction quality. “Never hesitate to take a free class at a studio, take a variety of classes from a variety of instructors, you’ll learn more about your practice, you don’t necessarily need a membership to the bigger studios, take the opportunities you have and run with them,” said Palomino. She really enjoys Rec Center classes and hasn’t found a significant difference in challenge or instructor ability.
Even if you are on a college student budget, you can still find inexpensive ways to exercise and look fashionable while doing so. Workout gear is available at most stores now, in multiple price ranges. Even discount stores like TJ Maxx have a great selection. With affordable yoga memberships and affordable workout gear, there is no excuse not to work out and look cute while doing it!
